history
Historic Selwerd was north of Groningen. The oldest sources suggest that it was an independent administrative district at the time. The Prefect of Groningen, the spiritual representative of the Utrecht Monastery , had been the administrator of the area since 1139. Groningen Castle was also located in Selwerd, and it is no longer preserved today, as was the monastery, which existed until 1584. Today the Van Starkenborghkanaal , which was created there in 1934 and runs through the province of Groningen, runs in the area.
In today's Selwerd all streets are named after trees , the different tree species are also planted next to the streets. The residential area was laid out in 1965, and the three large student residences that are still in operation today were built in the late 1960s. At the end of the 1990s, additional apartments and high-rise buildings were built in a second construction phase; especially apartments for seniors.
