Vegetative characteristics

Sempervivum pumilum grows as an open, group-forming rosette plant with a diameter of 1 to 2 centimeters and forms numerous runners up to 1 centimeter in length. The spread, lanceolate or oblong lanceolate, pointed or short tapering leaves are sometimes bare. They are greyish green and convex on both sides. The leaf blade is about 10 millimeters long, 3 to 4 millimeters wide and about 2 millimeters thick.

Generative characteristics

The flower shoots reach a length of 4 to 10 centimeters. It has lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, tapering, almost upright leaves that are 10 to 15 millimeters long. The little-flowered inflorescence consists of two to three very short coils. The ten to twelve-fold flowers have a diameter of about 2 centimeters. Their pointed or short tapering, reddish, purple-tipped, about 5 millimeter long petals are fused together over a length of up to 2.5 millimeters. The lanceolate to elongated lanceolate, small-pointed or short tapering sepals have a length of about 10 millimeters. They are pink-purple in color and have lighter edges. The 4 to 6 millimeter long stamens are purple, the anthers are red-purple. The elongated, blunt stylus is green or purple in color. The square nectar flakes are green.

Systematics and distribution

Sempervivum pumilum is widespread in the north of the Caucasus in Russia and Georgia ( Ossetia ) in the alpine zone and in dry bush at altitudes of 1300 to 3000 meters.

The first description by Friedrich August Marschall von Bieberstein was published in 1808.
