The Seneca River (formerly Isundiga River ) is formed by the confluence of the Keowee River and Twelvemile Creek in northwest South Carolina , below Lake Keowee near Clemson . The two rivers Seneca River and Tugaloo River used to flow together to form the Savannah River. With the damming of the Savannah River, the Seneca River has now become a 34 km long arm of Lake Hartwell .

The separation between the Seneca River and its headwaters, the Keowee River, changed over time. During the time of the American Revolution , the upper reaches of the Seneca River was often referred to as the Keowee River.

Nowadays the section of the Keowee River between Keowee Dam and its confluence with Twelvemile Creek is referred to as the "Seneca River" on many maps .
