Sepp Leodolter

Sepp Leodolter (born May 14, 1943 in Vienna ) is an Austrian gynecologist .

Career

Sepp Leodolter completed his medical studies at the University of Vienna from 1961 to 1967 and received his doctorate in medicine. In the following two years as an assistant doctor at the Pharmacological Institute of the University of Vienna, Leodolter was involved in the development of the contraceptive hexoprenaline . In 1981 Leodolter was appointed director of the gynecological and obstetrical department of the Lainz Hospital and in 1983 he was appointed head of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for the research and treatment of female sterility . In 1996 Leodolter was appointed full professor at the University of Vienna and was appointed head of the clinical department for general gynecology and gynecological oncology at the University Clinic for Gynecology in Vienna.

Between 1988 and 1990 Sepp Leodolter worked as a technical expert for artificial insemination at the Federal Ministry of Justice Austria and was involved in the drafting of the law on reproductive aid. His mother, Minister of Health Ingrid Leodolter , played a key role in the development of the mother-child passport and in the organization of the Austria-wide birth register.

Since 1985 Leodolter has been a founding member and board member of the Austrian Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology (President from 2003 to 2005) and the Working Group for Gynecological Oncology (since 1999 and President from 1999 to 2001). From 2001 to 2007 he was President of the Society of Doctors in Vienna , and in 2008 he was elected Honorary President.

Leodolter was awarded the Anton von Eiselsberg Prize in 1970 and 1972, which is awarded for outstanding scientific work. In 2013 Leodolter received the Billroth Medal for his services to the Society of Doctors and Viennese Medicine.

In 2007, an article about a scientific study by Sepp Leodolter and Johannes Huber was published in News magazine , in which the results of their research in the field of cell therapy for cancer patients were described as a "sensational success". This article sparked a number of reactions in the media, criticizing its content and presentation.

As a consequence of these reactions, referred to by the media as the “cell therapy affair”, Leodolter and Huber left the Lower Austrian research company Cell Med Research .
