Subfamily : Septiferinae
Genre : Septifer
Type : Septifer bilocularis
Scientific name
Septifer bilocularis
( Linnaeus , 1758)

Septifer bilocularis is a mussel species from the mussel family(Mytilidae). It is the type species of the genus Septifer .

features

The housing has a very tightly rounded front end and a broadly rounded rear end. The dorsal edge is slightly angled, the greatest height is reached well in front of the center of the housing. The ventral edge is slightly concave towards the front end, convex towards the rear end, resulting in a slightly s-shaped curved ventral edge. This results in an approximately rectangular housing outline with a tightly rounded and protruding corner. The housings are up to 6 cm long. In the anterior angle of the housing below the vertebra , a septum is formed which runs approximately parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing (dorsoventral direction). The anterior sphincter is attached to the septum. The outside has numerous, fine, radial ribs that can also split towards the edge of the case. The concentric growth strips are partly strongly developed. The edges of the case are more or less serrated. The periostracum is brownish, the skin is greenish-brown to intense orange-red. The inside is purple-brown, bluish or cream-colored.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs from South Africa , across the Indian Ocean (including the Red Sea ), Australia , Polynesia , the eastern Pacific to southern Japan . It often lives (in Vietnam ) in reef communities in the inner part of bays that are somewhat protected from the waves. They live there from the intertidal to about 10 to 15 meters water depth. The species was anthropogenic in the eastern Mediterranean. Septifer bilocularis is likely to live up to eleven years.

Taxonomy

The taxon was established by Carl von Linné in 1758 as Mytilus bilocularis . It is the type species of the genus Septifer Récluz , 1848.
