The Serbska Lipa (in German: Sorbian Linde ) was an association founded on October 4, 1849 as an umbrella organization for Sorbian high school students and students. In it, Sorbian student associations were formed that wanted to campaign for the Sorbian nation in the course of the March democratic revolution .

background

In a Saxon government ordinance of August 21, 1849, all existing fatherland associations were prohibited. This not only affected German associations, such as the Leipzig Fatherland Association , but also a Sorbian national movement that was articulating for the first time and which had formed in the United Wendish Associations in Bautzen with over 2,000 members in 1848 . Five Sorbs from the ranks of this association were sent to the Saxon state parliament.

The student members of the United Wendish Associations wanted to evade the ban. To this end, they organized democratically and patriotically-minded Sorbian students in the semester break following the ban before the autumn semester of 1849 and achieved the merger of the most important Sorbian student associations at the time, such as the Sorabicum of the Wendish Preacher Society in Leipzig and the Prague Serbowka within the Serbska Lipa. Thanks to lively correspondence, the students remained in contact with one another across countries even during the lectures. An annual meeting of all Sorbian students for political and cultural exchange was set. In order to escape a ban by the authorities, the Serbska Lipa had to dissolve itself on October 10, 1850 the following year. An attempt at re-establishment in 1855 failed.

Purpose of the association

"§ 4 The aim of the Serbska Lipa is the union of Wendish students for the purpose of enthusiasm for the nationality, for common work in favor of the Wendish and the perfecting of their education in Wendish matters."

- Statute of 1849

Aftermath

The idea of a Sorbian national movement was taken up again in the 1870s by young sorbs such as Arnošt Muka . In recognition of the pioneering discourses of the Serbska Lipa, the Sorbian literary magazine Lipa Serbska was published in 1876 , which later appeared as a supplement in the monthly Łužica .

The annual meeting of the Sorbian students planned by the Serbska Lipa was realized by the young sorbs in the form of the Schadźowanka , which has been held annually since 1875 .
