Serge Cantat

Serge Cantat (* 1973 ) is a French mathematician.

Cantat received his doctorate from Étienne Ghys at the École normal supérieure de Lyon in 1999 (Automorphismes des surfaces complexes). He is a professor at the University of Rennes I . He is also the research director of the CNRS at the École normal supérieure (Paris) .

He deals with complex dynamics and dynamics of automorphisms of algebraic surfaces . He examined the algebraic structure of the Cremona group (group of the birational automorphisms of the n-dimensional projective space over a body k) and showed with Lamy that it is not a simple group in two dimensions . In particular, if k is the field of complex numbers, the Cremona group contains an infinite, uncountable family of different normal subgroups .

For 2018 he is invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Rio de Janeiro . In 2012 he received the Prix ​​Paul Doistau-Émile Blutet for his work on dynamic systems (and especially holomorphic dynamic systems). In 2012 he was invited speaker at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Krakow (The Cremona group in two variables). In 2012 he received the La Recherche Prize.
