Étienne Ghys (born December 29, 1954 in Lille ) is a French mathematician.

biography

Ghys studied from 1974 to 1978 at the École normal supérieure in Saint-Cloud . In 1975 he received his degree in mathematics from the University of Paris-South in Orsay . In 1977 he received his Agrégation and in 1979 his diploma (Thése du Troisieme Cycle) at the University of Lille , where he carried out research and completed his habilitation in 1986. From 1974 he was a researcher at the CNRS . From 1979 to 1981 he was at the Research Institute for Mathematics IMPA in Rio de Janeiro . 1982/83 he was an assistant professor at the City University of New York. Since 1988 he has been the CNRS Research Director at the Unité de mathématiques pures et appliquées (UMPA) of the École normal supérieure de Lyon , of which he was director from 1998 to 2002.

He is married and has two children.

Serge Cantat is one of his PhD students .

Work and awards

Ghys dealt with geometry, topology and dynamic systems, in particular complex dynamics.

Until 2010 Ghys was editor of the Publications mathématiques de l´ IHES . He is co-author of the computer graphics films Dimensions - une promenade mathématique and Chaos - une aventure mathématique , where he is responsible for the mathematical background and the scenario.

In 1991 he received the CNRS silver medal. He has been a corresponding member since 1994 and a member since 2004 of the French Academy of Sciences , whose Prix Servant he received in 1990. Since 2002 he has also been an external member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. In 2012 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea . At the ICM 2006 in Madrid he gave a plenary lecture on Knots and Dynamics . He was invited speaker both in 1990 at the ICM in Kyōto ( Le cercle al'infini des surfaces a courbure negative ) and in 2014 at the ICM in Seoul ( The internet and the popularization of mathematics ). He is an honorary doctorate from the University of Geneva (2008).
