Arthur Baron
Arthur Baron (born May 15, 1874 in Vienna , † August 30, 1944, presumably in the USA) was an Austrian architect .
Life
Arthur Baron came from a Jewish family who moved to Vienna from Hungary shortly before he was born. After finishing secondary school, he attended the technical college , where he was a student of Karl König and Karl Mayreder . He completed his studies with the so-called strict examination , an early form of the diploma examination, in 1899 and received the Gegha scholarship, which enabled him to spend a longer period abroad.
Then Baron was assistant at the chair for descriptive geometry at the Technical University, from 1901 he worked as a freelance architect. Until 1904 he worked together with Oskar Neumann . His office was very busy until the First World War, where he built villas, residential and commercial buildings in particular, but also some printing works. Not infrequently he was also the client of his own projects. Karl Limbach , who later became self-employed, also worked in his studio . When the economic situation deteriorated sharply, he withdrew into private life at an early age. After 1914 there are no more traces of his buildings. Baron entered into a marriage with the painter Kitty Kassowitz, who must have remained childless.
After Austria's annexation to the German Empire , Baron had to emigrate as a Jew at a very old age . He left Vienna in 1940, but it is not known where he was going. Since his brother lived in the United States, it could be that he moved there too. The date of his death is known, but the place of death is not. He was married to the painter Kitty (Katharina) Kassowitz (1882–1952). She returned to Vienna in 1948.
From 1903, Baron was a member of the Austrian Association of Engineers and Architects.
meaning
Arthur Baron began as a student of Karl König with historicist buildings, then switched to a style characterized by secessionist forms in line with contemporary tastes. Baron's interest in modern building techniques and materials is characteristic. He already used the concrete post construction and used glass and metal. His functionalist tendencies make him an important representative of early Viennese modernism.
