Sergei Alexandrovich Stepanov

Sergei Alexandrowitsch Stepanow ( Russian Сергей Александрович Степанов ; often quoted in English as SA Stepanov; * February 24, 1941 ) is a Russian mathematician who deals with number theory. He is at the Institute of Information Transmission Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

Stepanow completed his habilitation (Russian doctorate) in 1977 at the Steklow Institute under Dmitri Konstantinowitsch Faddejew with the thesis An elementary method in algebraic number theory . From 1987 to 2000 he was a professor at the Steklow Institute in Moscow . In the 1990s he was also at Bilkent University in Ankara .

Stepanov is known for his work in arithmetic algebraic geometry, especially for the Weil conjectures about algebraic curves, for which André Weil himself first proved. In 1969, Stepanov gave an "elementary" proof. He also deals with coding theory under aspects of algebraic geometry.

He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1975 . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
