Sergei Mikhailovich Perschin

Sergei Michailowitsch Perschin ( Russian Сергей Михайлович Першин ; born March 27, 1949 in Ischimbai ) is a Russian physicist and astronomer . He deals with lasers and their application for material analysis, especially in environmental and planetary research.

life and work

Perschin received his doctorate from Lomonosov University in 1976. From 1980 to 1985 he was professor of physics there. Since 1985 he has been working at institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences . From 1985 to 2001 he was group leader at the Institute for Space Research, where he was involved in two (ultimately failed) missions to Mars, the Russian mission " Fobos -86" and as a project manager for the LIDAR detector of the Mars Surveyor 1998 Lander . Since 2001 he has been group leader at the Center for Wave Research at the Prokhorov Institute for General Physics (PGPI / GPI RAS) of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Perschin mainly deals with basic research on lasers and nonlinear optics as well as applications of lasers for the analysis of materials, in particular lidar technology , which is also used in environmental research and for analyzing the composition of planetary atmospheres, and laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (LIBS) .
