Sergio Doplicher (born December 30, 1940 in Trieste ) is an Italian mathematical physicist. Since 1976 he has been a professor at the University of Rome, La Sapienza , where he retired in 2011.

Doplicher is known for his work on the axiomatic quantum field theory according to Rudolf Haag (Algebraic QFT according to Haag-Kastler), with whom he also worked. He also worked a lot with John E. Roberts , who worked in Rome for a long time. With Roberts and Haag he investigated super-selection rules in algebraic QFT and with Roberts he proved a reconstruction theorem of fields and gauge groups from the algebra of observables. Later he dealt with the mathematical fundamentals of quantum gravity (non-commutativity of space-time coordinates).

In 1990 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Kyoto. In 2004 he received the Humboldt Research Award and in 2011 the Premio Nazionale del Presidente della Repubblica of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 2019 .
