Sergio Martínez , full name Sergio Daniel Martínez Alzuri (born February 15, 1969 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football player .

Career

society

The 1.73 meter tall Martinez, who played in the position of the striker , was part of the squad of the Montevidean club Defensor Sporting from 1986 to 1990 . The greatest success of this career phase was winning the Uruguayan championship title in 1987. In 1991 and 1992 he was then under contract with league rivals Peñarol . There he won the Copa Cerdeña and the Copa Murcia . At Apertura 1992, he moved to the opposite side of the Río de la Plata and joined the Argentine capital club Boca Juniors , for which he ran from then on until 1997. During this period he played at least 74 league games for the Argentines and scored 44 goals. In 1995 and 1996, however, he was again included in the Aurinegros squad . He then moved to Europe, where he signed a contract with the Spanish first division club Deportivo La Coruña . In the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons, however, there were only three appearances for him with 104 minutes of playing time in the Spanish Primera División . In some cases he was also included in the squad as a player in the 1999/2000 season. After returning home, he was still active for Nacional in 2000 and 2001 . In both years the Bolsos won the national championship title.

National team

Martínez, who played with the Uruguayan selection at the 1986 South American Games in Chile , was also a member of the Uruguayan senior team . He made his debut in the Celeste on September 27, 1988. His 35th and last international match he completed on July 20, 1997. In total, he scored five international goals. During this time he took part with Celeste in the 1990 World Cup, where he was used in the group game against South Korea . He was also a member of the Uruguayan eye-catchers at the 1989 Copa America , which finished second in Uruguay, and the 1991 Copa America . In 1995 he won the title with the Celeste at this tournament . Also in 1997 he was part of the squad at this event.
