Sergio Martínez (cyclist)

Sergio "Pipián" Martínez (born September 8, 1943 in Pipián , Cuba ; † October 2, 1979 in Havana ) was a Cuban cyclist .

Athletic career

His first international start came in 1962 at the Central American Games. Martínez, who started for the Matanzas association, won the first edition of the Tour of Cuba in 1964 . In 1966, 1968 and 1969 he was able to repeat this success. In 1965, 1967 and 1972 he took second place in the overall ranking. He was able to win a total of 28 stages of his home tour. Martinez was also a multiple track champion. In 1966 he won the titles in the 1000-meter time trial , in the single pursuit and in the team pursuit, each with new record times.

In 1968 Martínez started at the Olympic Games in Mexico : he could not finish the road race, in the team pursuit he did not get beyond the qualification with the Cuban team. In 1970 he won the bronze medal in the single pursuit at the Central America and Caribbean Games and a silver medal in the team pursuit on the track . At the Pan American Championships in the same year he was third in the road race . Martinez started four times in the International Peace Tour . 61st place on his debut in 1964 remained his best placement.

In 1979 Martínez, now active as a trainer, died of the consequences of a traffic accident with his motorcycle.
