Serhiy Hennadijowytsch Shcherbakov ( Ukrainian Сергій Геннадійович Щербаков , Russian Сергей Геннадиевич Щербаков / Sergei Shcherbakov Gennadijewitsch * 15. August 1971 in Donetsk , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a retired Ukrainian football player on the position of midfielder .
In 1993 he had to end his active career due to a serious injury after a car accident and has been dependent on a wheelchair ever since .
Career
Youth and club career
Shcherbakov began his active career as a football player in his hometown in the youth department of Shakhtar Donetsk . From there he moved in 1988 to the professional team of Shakhtar Donetsk in the highest league of the Soviet Union . He was then active in the top division from 1988 to 1991 for three seasons before the Soviet Union dissolved in late 1991. He then played one season ( 1992 ) in the newly founded Ukrainian Premjer-Liha , the top division in Ukrainian football.
He made his professional debut on June 6, 1988 in a 3-1 defeat against today's Kazakh club Qairat Almaty . In total, he came to 52 league games in the Soviet Union, as well as 18 missions in the Ukraine.
In 1992 Shcherbakov finally signed a four-year contract with the traditional Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon . After only 25 completed championship games and five goals in six months, the career of the young midfielder should come to a dramatic end on December 14, 1993. In a serious car accident in which he drove over the red light , he was rammed from the side by another vehicle. In the hospital, the then 22-year-old was diagnosed with an injury to the spine, which led to paraplegia . In the two seasons in which Shcherbakov was used, the team reached third place in the final table.
After this accident, problems arose with the insurance he had received from his Portuguese club. The club had committed to paying the midfielder $ 10,000 a month in advance . Problems arose, as the club management of Sporting Lisbon was changed and a new president was in office.
International
Shcherbakov made his first international appearance in the U-17 national team of the Soviet Union. So he came to a total of 31 missions in the junior national teams. At the U-18 European Football Championship in 1990 , he was European champion with the U-18 selection of the Soviet Union after the team defeated the Portuguese U-18 selection in the final with 4-2 on penalties. Due to the success, the team took part in the Junior World Cup in Portugal in 1991 , where Shcherbakov secured the title of top scorer with five goals and finished third with the team.
In 1991 he played for the U-20 national team of the Ukrainian SSR for the first time. Overall, he was used for the team in three games and scored one goal. A year later, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, he was in the squad of the Russian U-21 national team . In the same year he made his debut in the national team of his home country , for which he came on 2 missions. His first assignment was on April 29, 1992 in Uzhhorod in a friendly against Hungary ; the match ended in a 3-1 defeat.

Private life and life after the accident
Shcherbakov has lived in the Russian capital Moscow since 1997 and works there in the Dikul rehabilitation center ; he is also President of the Russian Disabled Football Association.
