students life

The Serresche student album is a family book (friendship album ) from the middle of the 18th century . It is located in the city archive of Halle (Saale) and is part of a collection of student records from the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg .

meaning

For Werner Piechocki , the former director of the Halle State Archives, the Serresche student album is "without a doubt the most precious item in the collection". The album contains “a large number of beautiful gouaches ” measuring 17.5 by 13 cm, which depict the everyday life of students at the University of Halle in a “rough manner”, “with rare clarity and realism”. The stud book comes from Paul Serres (also Paulus Serrés) and was created in Halle around 1748. It was acquired by the city archives in 1943 for 3,900 Reichsmarks . The register includes 257 entries and 26 image additions. The original owner Serres studied at the Friedrichs University, in the summer semester 1749 at the University of Jena and the University of Leipzig . It is likely that it is identical to the cand. Iur. Paul Serres (1727–1774) is from a Huguenot family who was appointed judge ( Juge ) of the Huguenot colonies in the Prussian Duchy of Kleve on May 21, 1750 and held office until his death in 1774. He resided in Rees , where he was the main office of Prussian customs inspector for the royal Rhine tolls .

The Halle city archive has a collection of 80 family records.

In 1983 a selection of pictures from the album was published by Halle Information. The folder contains the images:

  • Student life in Halle (sheet divided into 12 parts)
  • Student furniture
  • Vice President election
  • Student move to the Great Berlin (a square in the old town of Halle)
  • Excursion on horseback
  • Sleigh ride on the market square

In 2009 the studbook was exhibited in Halle as part of the Handel Year. In 2011 it was part of an exhibition on student life in the 18th century .
