"Extra muros" sessions
The sessions of the two Swiss parliamentary chambers ( National Council and Council of States ) and the United Federal Assembly usually take place in the Federal Palace in Bern . Sessions that take place in a different location are called “ extra muros ” ( Latin: outside the walls ).
Due to renovation work on the Federal Palace, three sessions took place in the three non-German-speaking regions:
- Autumn session 1993 in Geneva (French-speaking part of the country)
- Spring session 2001 in Lugano (Italian-speaking part of the country)
- Autumn session 2006 in Flims (Rhaeto-Romanic part of the country)
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the following sessions will take place at the Bernexpo exhibition center in Bern for reasons of health protection :
