Seun Kuti
Seun Kuti (born January 11, 1983 in Lagos ; full name Oluseun Anikulapo Kuti ) is a Nigerian musician ( saxophone , vocals, composition) and band leader . His father Fela Kuti , whose former band Egypt 80 he leads, is considered the founder of Afrobeat ; Seun Kuti continues this tradition. He usually appears with a band as Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 .
Life
At the age of nine, Seun Kuti expressed the desire to sing in his father's band, which to this day consists of around 15 musicians. Shortly afterwards he worked as a background singer, at the age of twelve he opened concerts as a singer before his father took the stage. After his father's death in 1997, Seun Kuti became the lead singer in place of his father. In 2008 his first album was released with Seun Kuti & Fela's Egypt 80 (also released as Many Things in the same year ), in 2011 his second with From Africa with Fury: Rise . Black Times was published in 2018, with Carlos Santana among others .
Like his father, Seun Kuti is politically active. In 2012, for example, he took part in the Occupy Nigeria protests, which opposed the elimination of subsidies on fuels by then President Goodluck Jonathan . In his texts he speaks out against grievances, especially in his home country, and praises pan-African charismatic politicians. Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 tour frequently in Europe, North America and Nigeria.
Kuti describes himself as an atheist . He has had a daughter with his long-term partner since 2013.

Seun Kuti's brother Femi Kuti (* 1962) is also known as an Afrobeat musician. In a review from 2011, both musicians were compared: “Femi's performance is more physical, more aggressive, more direct and more athletic. Seun's style, on the other hand, is more playful, jazzy and filigree. "
