The Severn Overhead line crossing Aust is a Overhead line crossing over the River Severn between Aust ( South Gloucestershire ) and Chepstow ( Monmouthshire ) in Great Britain , parallel to the first bridge Sever . At 1,618 meters, it has the largest span of any overhead line in Great Britain.

construction

The overhead line crossing was built in the 1950s by the construction company JL Eve Construction and carries a two-circuit 275 kV line that runs from the Welsh substation Whitson to the English substation Iron Acton. The two crossing masts are each 148.75 meters high. While the western mast is on the Beachley Peninsula , the eastern mast is on a caisson accessible from the shore via a bridge . Like most high voltage lines in Great Britain, it belongs to the transmission system operator National Grid .

Immediately to the west of the Severn Crossing is another overhead line crossing of the River Wye .

Parallel to the 275 kV overhead line, a 400 kV line has been running since 1971, which crosses under the Severn as well as the overhead line crossing and the Severn bridge via a cable tunnel.
