Sextus Cornelius Dexter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sextus Cornelius Dexter (full name form Sextus Cornelius Sexti filius Arnensis Dexter ) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 2nd century AD . Individual stations of his career, which he completed in the first half of the 2nd century, are known through an inscription. His career is in the inscription as cursus inversus , d. H. in descending order.

Dexter was initially Praefectus fabrum . This was followed by his military career, which consisted of the usual tres militiae for a member of the equestrian order . He initially took over as prefect of the Cohors V Raetorum , which was stationed in the province of Britannia . Then he became a tribune in the Legio VIII Augusta , which had its main camp in Argentoratum . The third stage was the command of the Ala I Augusta Gemina Colonorum , which was stationed in the province of Cappadocia .

At the end of his military career he took over the management of the fleet ( Classis Syriaca ) stationed in the province of Syria ; he is likely to have led the fleet there between 132 and 136. For his achievements during the Bar Kochba uprising he received the following awards ( Dona Militaria ): a Hasta pura and a Vexillum ( donis militaribus donato a divo Hadriano ob bellum Iudaicum hasta pura et vexillo ).

Then Dexter held civilian posts in the administration. He was initially procurator Neaspoleos et Mausolei ; in this function he was u. A. responsible for the granaries in the harbor and the mausoleum of Alexander the great. Next he became iuridicus Alexandreae ; this post was associated with an annual income of 200,000 sesterces . He is documented as iuridicus Alexandreae by another inscription. Subsequently, he was procurator in the province of Asia . A third inscription shows that he was then procurator for the provinces of Gallia Belgica and Germania inferior and superior .

Dexter was enrolled in the Arnensis tribe . He came from Saldae in the province of Mauretania Caesariensis , where the inscription was also made for him. The Sextus Cornelius Luci filius Arnensis Dexter Maximus and Sextus Cornelius Sexti filius Arnensis Dexter Petronianus listed in another inscription from Saldae are likely to be descendants of Cornelius Dexter.
