Seymour Newman

Seymour Newman (born May 17, 1953 in Manchester Parish ) is a retired Jamaican sprinter and middle distance runner .

Newman won the 1972 400-meter run of the CARIFTA Games in Bridgetown in the U20 age group. At the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo in 1974, he was second over the same distance and third in the 4 x 400 meter relay . In 1976 he took part in the Olympic Games in Montreal , where he finished fifth with the relay, while he narrowly missed the finals in the 800-meter run . The following year he was in Xalapa both over 400 and over 800 meters Central America and Caribbean champions. He beat the Olympic champion Alberto Juantorena from Cuba in the 400-meter run .

At the Central American and Caribbean Games in Medellín in 1978, Newman finished third in the 400-meter run. Shortly afterwards he celebrated his possibly most important international success at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton . In the 800-meter run, he won the silver medal behind the Kenyan Mike Boit .
