Sgraffitohaus (Eggenburg)
The so-called painted house or sgraffitohaus is a building on the main square of the Lower Austrian town of Eggenburg . It is under monument protection ( list entry ).
History and description
According to an inscription on the house, the sgraffito paintings were made on the house in 1547. It is presumed that the building itself is not much older than the paintings. A coat of arms on the house indicates the Heggemüller von Dubenweiler family, but this cannot be traced in the history of Eggenburg.
The sgraffito house was built as a one-story corner house on the main square of Eggenburg with a roof sloping towards Kremserstraße. At the corner of the house there is a wide bay window , the supporting arch of which is supported by two curved consoles and cut through by the edge of the house. Another wide bay is on the side of the house facing the main square. This is carried by a profiled arch resting on two consoles.
The entire facade of the house is covered with sgraffito paintings. Later structural changes such as the installation of larger windows damaged or even destroyed these paintings.
The sgraffito paintings mainly depict scenes and people from the Old Testament as well as parables of Jesus . There are also half-length portraits of Emperor Ferdinand and his wife Anna of Bohemia and Hungary as well as the coats of arms of Austria and Hungary .
