Shōji Shibata

Shōji Shibata ( Japanese 柴 田 承 二 , Shibata Shōji ; born October 23, 1915 in Tokyo Prefecture ; † July 12, 2016 ) was a Japanese biochemist and pharmacist .

biography

Shibata studied pharmacy at the Imperial University of Tokyo with a bachelor's degree in 1938 and a doctorate in 1944. He was then assistant professor and from 1950 professor at the Pharmaceutical Institute. In 1976 he retired, but was then professor at Meiji University of Pharmacy until 1986.

Shibata dealt with the biochemistry of the metabolism of lichens and fungi, the biosynthesis of natural substances and the analysis of the active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine .

In 1953/54 he was visiting scholar at the London Institute for Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and in 1968 visiting professor at the University of British Columbia . He was an honorary member of the American Pharmaceutical Association and the Japanese Pharmaceutical Society and a member of the Leopoldina . In 1989 he received an honorary professorship from the Chinese Academy of Sciences ( Materia Medica Institute in Shanghai).

In 1972 he received the Prize of the Japanese Academy of Sciences and in 1987 the Order of Merit of the Rising Sun 2nd class. In 1997 he was appointed person with special cultural merits .
