Shabbir Siddiquie

Shabbir Siddiquie ( Bengali সাব্বির সিদ্দিকী ; * 1951 in Bangladesh ) is a German film producer and director of documentary films who lives in Bochum .

Live and act

Shabbir Siddiquie graduated from Punjab University in Lahore with a degree in geography with a focus on urban planning. In 1971 he fled to Germany during the war between India and Pakistan and came via detours to Bochum , where he wanted to study at the Ruhr University . Although he had neither a passport nor documents from his home university, nor an admission to a German university, he was able to personally describe his problem to the then rector Kurt Biedenkopf and was accepted for the course without red tape. Siddiquie studied geography with a focus on urban planning and development policy at the University of Bochum and film design in Dortmund .

After graduating, he worked as a documentary filmmaker as a consultant for development aid and policy at the Ruhr University in Bochum. His first films were contributions to the WDR . In addition to his studies, he organized feature film series with films from Egypt and Bangladesh in over 10 different German cities.

The thematic focus of Siddiquies films is on cities that are under monument protection and UNESCO World Heritage Sites . His film Save the Old Town of Sanaa is the first part of the three-part series about Sanaa and one of 6 films that he made about the city of Sanaa and the surrounding area, and which were broadcast by WDR . The film was co-financed by the Federal Foreign Office in Bonn, the EC and UNESCO . The film won the award of the Media save Art festival in the German Villa Massimo Academy in Rome. The 90-minute version Save Sanaa was awarded the “European Culture Stage 91” prize. The film Quedlinburg - A Legacy for Tomorrow was broadcast by ZDF in over 14 countries.
