Shabby Chic (from English shabby , "shabby", "ailing", "run down") is a furnishing style in which a mixture of heirlooms, flea market purchases and homemade items as well as furniture and objects with visible signs of use are part of the concept. The style also includes soft, faded colors in natural tones, simple patterns and plain floors made of hardwood, sisal or other natural materials.

Origin and development

The style originated in the UK in the 1980s after the establishment of large, old gentry manors, and was originally a countermovement to the tendency of the upper middle class to buy expensive Victorian- style interiors .

In 1989, English stylist Rachel Ashwell opened a store in Santa Monica , California selling flea market items. She is now a partner in several labels belonging to the Californian company Shabby Chic Brand LCC in Culver City , which also registered the oxymoron Shabby Chic as a trademark. Among other things, the company manufactures period furniture in which new items appear artificially "aged", although according to Ashwell this is explicitly not part of this style.

“The increasing popularity of old painted wooden furniture means that nowadays you can find more and more pieces that have been subjected to an artificial aging process, while the real old is unfortunately becoming increasingly rare. [...] Anyone who buys a piece that has yet to be worked on so that it looks worn has not understood what it is about, because the charm of a piece lies in the fact that it has naturally aged and not in the impression created by manipulation, it would be old. "

The Shabby Chic furnishing style has developed from an alternative countermovement to a trend, also because it takes up aspects of sustainability to a large extent .

The furnishing style

Pieces of furniture in a shabby chic look present themselves through scratches, flaked paint and curly designs. The furniture and accessories do not necessarily have to be old, because new furniture in the old design is produced especially for this style. In addition to solid wooden furniture and leather cushions, ceramic, glass and crystal belong as living accessories in an original shabby chic interior.

The special look is best accentuated by light pastel colors, as these better underline the dark wood tones.

The most popular fabrics for shabby chic furnishings are velvet , lace , silk and calico . The noble, soft flowing fabrics contribute to a romantic furnishing look. Fabrics from the 18th and 19th centuries Century and are printed with artful patterns, call themselves paisley and Toile-de-Jouy and are also very popular for authentic implementation of the look.
