Shadowrun Returns is a computer role-playing game by the US developer Harebrained Schemes , based on the role-playing rules Shadowrun . The game was financed with the help of a crowdfunding campaign via the online platform Kickstarter.com . It was released on July 25, 2013 for the Windows and Mac OS operating systems, and then on September 26, 2013 for Android and iOS . A version for Linux was released on October 30, 2013.

In February 2014 the add-on Shadowrun: Dragonfall was released and in September of the same year the standalone game Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut . In August 2015, Shadowrun: Hong Kong was released.

action

The game is set in a futuristic scenario of the city of Seattle . The player character receives a message from a shadowrunner friend after he was murdered. This is made possible by the "Dead Mans Switch", an automatic message that is activated after death. He asks the player character to find the client.

Gameplay

At the beginning the player creates a character for whom he can choose from five races (human, elf, dwarf, orc, troll) and six character classes (street samurai, mage, decker, shaman, rigger, physical adept). Alternatively, he can put together his own class from different skills. In the course of the game, more companion characters join. The game is presented from an isometric perspective . The fights are turn based.

development

The development studio Harebrained Scheme was founded by Shadowrun inventor Jordan Weisman; Among the employees was Mitch Gitelman, the producer of Microsoft's 2007 multiplayer action game Shadowrun . The Shadowrun Returns project was announced immediately after the success of the Kickstarter project Double Fine Adventure (later: Broken Age ). Together with Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded , Wasteland 2 and Project Fedora (later: Tex Murphy: Tesla Effect ) it was one of the first titles to try to revive old computer game franchises with the help of crowdfunding. The target of the campaign, which started on April 4, 2012, was 400,000 US dollars. In fact, by the end of the campaign on April 29, the developer had raised $ 1.83 million from over 36,000 supporters on Kickstarter and another $ 60,000 through alternative payment provider PayPal . Due to the numerous additional income, the scope of the project was significantly expanded.

reception

Shadowrun Returns received mostly positive reviews ( Metacritic : 76 out of 100).

“Does everything sound like a slap? Yes and no. If Shadowrun Returns didn't have a great story, no first-class dialogues and, despite the sterile game world, no atmosphere that was partly dense for cutting - it might be one. […] In terms of play, however, Shadowrun Returns remains far below its potential - and also far below what genre classics such as Fallout or Baldur's Gate already offered fifteen years ago. "

Sequels

Harebrained Schemes released several sequels to the game. In 2014 the add-on Shadowrun: Dragonfall , which is based in Berlin in 2054, was released. A short time later it was published again as a standalone game under the name Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut for Linux, Macintosh and Windows. Dragonfall contains various new technical features, e.g. B. you can now save the progress at any time and use an editor for your own adventures. In addition, the narrative is now much less linear and there are various side missions . The atmospheric scenario, the well-told story with surprising turns and the character drawing were generally praised. As with Shadowrun: Returns , the opponents' poor AI and the limited tactical options in combat were criticized . The add-on Shadowrun: Dragonfall received more positive reviews than the base game Shadowrun Returns : 81 out of 100 according to Metacritic . The standalone game Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut received 87 out of 100 according to Metacritic.

In 2015 Shadowrun: Hong Kong was released for Linux, Macintosh and Windows. Here, too, as with its predecessors, the narrative, the character drawing and the atmosphere were praised and the technical implementation was criticized. In addition, the amount of text had become too big for some critics, especially compared to Dragonfall . Shadowrun: Hong Kong received 81 out of 100 according to Metacritic .
