Shadows of a Leader is a documentary about the Amazon Guard , the bodyguards of Muammar al-Gaddafi . It was shot in 2004 as the first film by director Rania Ajami in Libya .

The film follows some of Gaddafi's bodyguards at work, their entrance exams to the military academy and their daily lives. It shows the tensions women are exposed to between Islam, the modernization of a nomadic society, militant feminism and an urban dictatorship.

Trivia

Ajami had to wait two years for permission to film in Libya. She was the first filmmaker to gain access and film permission to some of the places and people shown in the film. During the filming, she learned from the Libyan soldiers how to shoot an RPG .
