The Shafer Peak is a distinctive, 3600 m high mountain in the East Antarctic Victoria Land . In the Deep Freeze Range it rises about 5 km south of Mount Hewson .
The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named him in 1968 after Lieutenant Commander Willard George Shafer (* 1931) of the United States Navy , in the winter of 1965 officer on duty for the nuclear reactor at McMurdo Station as part of the Army Nuclear Power Program .
