Shambyu

Shambyu is a settlement in the constituency of Mashare , Kavango-East region in northeastern Namibia . With the surrounding settlements of Nayita, Utokota and Gove, Shambyu has a population of around 21,000. The village is located on the south bank of the Okavango , above a fertile lowland, around 30 kilometers east of the city of Rundu .

history

Shambyu was founded in 1930 as a Roman Catholic mission station and named after the Shambyu tribe, the Kavango ethnic group . The residence of Shambyu Kings initially located in Uvungu-Vungu ( 17 ° 54 '  S , 19 ° 50'  O ) and now in Kayengona ( 17 ° 53 '  S , 19 ° 53'  O ). In the 1960s, the Roman Catholic Church in Namibia also opened a hospital and a youth home. In 1984 the foundation stone for the Kavango Museum was laid in Shambyu by hompa Maria Mwengere .
