The Roman Catholic Church in Namibia ( English Roman Catholic Church in Namibia ) is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church . The Catholic Church in Namibia emerged strongly from the missionary work of religious orders from Germany , in particular the Order of the Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary .

The Roman Catholic Church in Namibia has around 375,000 members (as of September 2016), which is just under 17 percent of the total population. The main church is St. Mary's Cathedral in Windhoek .

Archbishop Peter Brian Wells has represented the Holy See in Namibia as Apostolic Nuncio since February 2016 .

  • Archdiocese of Windhoek : 560,158 square kilometers; 297,000 Catholics; 72 parishes with 66 priests and 25 deacons
  • Diocese of Oshakati : Cathedral in Ongwediva completed at the end of 2019. In 2020 the Archdiocese of Windhoek is to be divided into the two dioceses of Windhoek and Oshakati.
  • Apostolic Vicariate Rundu : 140,046 square kilometers; 99,000 Catholics; 10 congregations with 21 priests and 14 deacons
  • Keetmanshoop diocese : 246,110 square kilometers; 42,500 Catholics; 111 parishes with 16 priests and 13 deacons

engagement

Among other things, the church operates the HIV / AIDS program “Catholic Aids Action”, the largest in Namibia. In addition, six hospitals and nine clinics are under the roof of the Roman Catholic Church in Namibia. The church operates 22 schools, 29 kindergartens and 21 student homes nationwide.
