The Roman Catholic Church in Senegal is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church .

history

As early as 1482, the Portuguese built a chapel on Gorée , an island off the coast of Senegal. 1763 was by Pope Clement XIII. the Apostolic Prefecture of Senegal was established. In 1857 the seminary was founded by Sébikotane ( Grand séminaire François Libermann ).

In 1992 Pope John Paul II visited Dakar.

The Catholic Church operates 38 colleges for middle and higher education in Senegal, as well as 6 training centers for technical and other professions. 54,000 pupils are trained there, which corresponds to around 10% of the country.

The Catholic Church has been involved in Christian-Islamic dialogue for years . There is no state religion. Over 90 percent of the population profess Islam .

The Catholic Church is responsible for the branches of the Université Catholique de l'Afrique de l'Ouest (UCAO) in Dakar and Ziguinchor .

The Holy See takes in Senegal , as Apostolic Nuncio , since August 2016 Archbishop Michael Banach .

Chairman of the Bishops' Conference of Senegal , Guinea-Bissau , Cape Verde and Mauritania is Bishop Jean-Noël Diouf , Bishop of Tambacounda.
