The Diocese of Keetmanshoop ( Latin Dioecesis Keetmanshoopensis , English Diocese of Keetmanshoop ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in Keetmanshoop in Namibia . The Keetmanshoop diocese is part of the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Windhoek . The main church of the diocese is the St. Stanislaus Cathedral in Keetmanshoop.

In 2016, 23.7% of the population were Catholics. They were looked after by three diocesan priests and 13 religious priests. There were also 13 deacons and 65 religious helpers.

The office of bishop of the diocese became vacant with the resignation of Philipp Pöllitzer OMI on July 21, 2017. The diocese has since been headed by Rev. Monsignor Klaus Lettner . Willem Christiaans was appointed bishop on February 7, 2018 and ordained on May 5, 2018 .

history

The diocese emerged from the Apostolic Prefecture Groß Namaland , founded on July 7, 1909, in German South West Africa . On July 14, 1930, the prefecture was elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate of Great Namaqualand and in February 1931 Joseph Klemann OSFS was appointed the first Vicar Apostolic to the rank of bishop. On January 13, 1949, the Vicariate was renamed Keetmanshoop. Pope John Paul II elevated the vicariate to a diocese on March 14, 1994.
