Shamsur Rahman ( Bengali : শামসুর রাহমান , Śāmasur Rāhamān ; * October 24, 1929 in Dhaka ; † August 17, 2006 ibid) was a Bangladeshi poet , journalist and civil rights activist.

Life

Shamsur Rahman was born the fourth of 13 children. He started writing at the age of 18 after graduating from Dhaka College . Rahman studied English literature at the University of Dhaka , where he received his Bachelor and Master degrees in 1953 . He had a long career as a journalist and was an editor for the daily Dainik Bangla and the weekly Bichitra . The politically active intellectuals were murdered in 1999 by supporters of the terrorist group " Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami " (HuJI).

Rahman wrote more than 60 poems in Bengali and was one of the most important authors in Bangladeshi literature of his time. Some of his works have been translated into English, such as “The Best Poems of Shamsur Rahman” (2005 in New Delhi) and “The Devotee, the Combatant: Selected Poems of Shamsur Rahman” (2000 in Dhaka).

He died of complications from kidney and liver failure.

Rahman's most famous work is probably the poem written in 1971 during the Bangladeshi War of Independence : Swadhinata tumi (স্বাধীনতা তুমি, literally: independence, you ).

Translations

Poems by Shamsur Rahman have been published in German translation by the Bangladesh magazine NETZ. They appeared in the anthology The Foreign Bird - Stories and Poems from Bangladesh , which was published by Draupadi-Verlag.
