Kazi Nazrul Islam ( Bengali : কাজী নজরুল ইসলাম , Kājī Najrul Islām ; born May 24, 1899 in Churulia, Bengal ; † August 29, 1976 in Dhaka , Bangladesh ) was a Bengali poet . He is considered the national poet of Bangladesh.

Life

Kazi Nazrul Islam was the son of Kazi Faqir Ahmad († 1908) and his wife Zaheda Khatun († 1928) and came from a village in the Bardhaman district of Bengal . During the First World War in 1917 he enrolled in the 49th Bengal Regiment of the Indian colonial army, which, however, was not used in combat. His will to fight was also expressed in his first published poem, The Autobiography of a Delinquent (May 1919).

His poetry was energetic and urgent, and met a sense of time. Kazi Nazrul Islam became a voice of the Bengali in the period of the campaign of non-cooperation with his ballad-like poems Bidrohi (The Rebel, 1922) and Pralayollas ( Exultation of the Final Fall, 1922), as well as the collection of poems Agnibina (The Fire Harp, 1922) and others Youth. He himself was infected by the revolutionary mood of the independence movement and was politically active against the British colonial power . In numerous verses he called for the unity of Hindus and Muslims in the anti-colonial struggle against oppression, so that many of his poems were banned, including the poetry volumes Up to now Banshi (The Poisoned Flute, 1924) and Bhangar Gan (Song of Tearing Down , 1924). In addition to his revolutionary poetry, he also wrote commercially successful love poems. He wrote lyrics and music for more than 2000 songs, including many ghazels in Bengali. In 1924 he married Pramila Devi.

From around 1930, Kazi Nazrul Islam turned to religious subjects in his works. After 1941 he did not publish anything because of an incurable brain disease ( Pick's disease ). In 1960 he received the Padma Bhushan . From 1962 until his death, Kazi Nazrul Islam lived a secluded life. After Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan , he moved from Kolkata to the new capital Dhaka in 1972 . In 1977 he received the Shadhinata Padak and the Ekushey Padak in Bangladesh , the highest civil merit orders in Bangladesh and official recognition as the national poet of Bangladesh. His grave is next to a mosque on the University of Dhaka campus .
