Then the group stage starts. Groups of four teams each are formed and the first games are played in this group: The GLS system, which was actually developed by Blizzard Entertainment and for tournaments under its title StarCraft II , was used for the first time. Two teams compete against each other. The two winners of the duels compete against each other. The winner of this game is safe in the so-called upper bracket. The losing match is played against one of the two teams that had already lost the first game, but they still play against each other beforehand to determine who will play against the loser in the second round. The second team that lands in the upper bracket is determined, the other teams land in the lower bracket.

The advantage of the upper bracket is that defeat is allowed there. The team that lost falls into the lower bracket, but if it loses one more game there, it is eliminated from the tournament. In the lower bracket, one more round is played first, this is played in the best-of-one , so that there are eight teams at the end of the group phase and thus also at the beginning of the main event.

These now compete against each other in best-of-three games . Four each in the upper bracket and four in the lower bracket. Team Secret won the upper bracket, and Team Liquid, which was beaten by Team Secret in the last game and ended up in the lower bracket, won the lower bracket. In the final, which was played in the best-of-five mode , Secret decided the tournament for itself and won three to one.

Controversy

A number of problems arose on the first day of the tournament: games could only be played late, there were problems with the sound and disconnections. The host of the expert couch, James "2GD" Harding, who is known for his often vulgar and obscene remarks, tried to make the sometimes very long waiting times for the fans as entertaining as possible and expressed himself as usual: obscene and vulgar. A day later it was announced that he had been fired, after violent protests from the community , Gabe Newell , the managing director of Valve , spoke up and dubbed Harding an "ass". He spoke up with a detailed statement and stated that he had explicitly said "Be yourself" when he was hired. Newell did not change his attitude; Harding did not return. In addition to Harding, the production company, KeyTV, was also fired because it was held responsible for the many problems. Then other production companies had to step in at short notice.

Before that, there was still confusion because it was not clear whether there would be a grand opening ceremony. After contradicting reports, it was announced that the presence of the teams was optional, previously it was said that the presence was mandatory. As part of this, it even happened that players were woken up in the morning just to tell them that they could sleep in. So only the players from the compLexity team came to the opening ceremony. A player on the team tweeted that he hadn't even been admitted to his seat at first. He wasn't the only one denied entry: a production manager announced that she had not been given a pass to go backstage .

In addition to problems that interrupted the game, there were also problems that more directly affected the commentators and players: The Russian commentators reported that they only found plastic chairs instead of caster tables and professional chairs. There was also a lack of Internet access, so the casters finally took matters into their own hands and laid cables so that they could use the Internet at their seats . In addition to these problems, there was also a game lag because a player's keyboard was lost. In addition, the booths in which the teams played the games separately from one another were not soundproof, so it happened that the teams could hear the commentators, which could have been a great advantage.

On the day of the final, the devices that the players had brought with them and were in the players' rooms also disappeared because they were also removed when the product equipment was removed. The hotel that organized the removal apologized and stated that it would make good any damage caused.
