The Schater ( Vostočnyj Šatër , "Eastern Schater"; or Vuan ; Anglicised: Shatior ) is a mountain in the Tian Shan on the border between Xinjiang ( PR China ) and Kazakhstan .

location

Until the border disputes were settled in 1999, the mountain formed the triangle point between Kyrgyzstan , Kazakhstan and China.

The 6637  m high Schater lies in the meridional chain ( Meridianal'Nyj ) at the junction of the Tengritoo ridge leading to the west . The Khan Tengri rises 6.34 km to the west. In between, 1.81 km further west, lies the 6511  m high western summit ( Zapadnyj Šatër , "Western Schater" ). To the south, the main ridge of the meridional chain leads from the Eastern Shater to the Pik Thorez , in the east-northeast to the Pik Prschewalski .

The north and south-west flanks of the Schater form the breeding ground for the two Engiltschek glaciers . On the southeast flank lies the upper end of the Tugbelchi Glacier, which flows eastwards .

Minor peaks

The 6201  m high secondary peak Pik (Lorenz) Saladin (or Saladina ; named after Lorenz Saladin ) rises southwest of the Western Schater .

Ascent history

The Eastern Shater was first climbed in 1968. The Western Schater was climbed by B. Efimov in 1964.
