Shawmut is the name of a subway station owned by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in the Boston borough of Dorchester in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . It provides access to the Ashmont branch of the line Red Line .
history
In 1872 took over Old Colony Railroad with the Shawmut Branch Railroad , the forerunner of today's route Red Line . The old route included stations on Melville Avenue and Center Street , which were combined to form Shawmut station in 1884 . In 1893, the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad took over the operation of the Old Colony Railroad . In 1924 the Boston Elevated Railway bought the Shawmut Branch Railroad and parts of the Milton Branch Railroad for the planned expansion of their Cambridge-Dorchester line , today's Red Line . The station was opened together with the terminus Ashmont on September 1, 1928 as an extension of the existing route and extensively renovated in 1981 and 2009.

The subway station is on Dayton Street . It is the only underground station on the Red Line south of Andrew station and is completely barrier-free .
