The John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago , USA, was built in 1929 and is therefore one of the oldest aquarium museum facilities in the world. It is also the largest covered aquarium in the world.
The aquarium is surrounded by a park called Museum Campus Chicago , which it shares with the Adler Planetarium and the Field Museum of Natural History . The museum is home to around 8,000 animals from over 650 species , including fish , marine mammals , birds , snakes , amphibians, and insects . It has about two million visitors annually.
The Shedd Aquarium was a gift from John G. Shedd to the City of Chicago. After the building was completed on December 19, 1929, the first exhibitions took place in 1930 .
On February 27, 1987, the Shedd Aquarium was recognized as a National Historic Landmark and entered on the National Register of Historic Places .
