The small town of Sheffield is located about 23 south of the Devonport ferry terminal on the Australian island of Tasmania .
The first settlement of Europeans took place in the middle of the 19th century. The British Edward Curr , manager of Van Diemen's Land Company , had come to Tasmania to buy a large amount of land there. He named the place after his hometown of Sheffield in Yorkshire . Today the city has about 1,400 inhabitants.
Attractions
Sheffield is on a thoroughfare to Cradle Mountain Lake St. Clair National Park . In 1986, in order to give the city its own attractions, the walls of houses in Sheffield were decorated with large-format paintings. There are now almost fifty murals. The annual “International Mural Fest” competition has existed since 2003. The nine best murals will then be exhibited in the city park until the next competition.
