Sheila Shulman

Sheila Shulman (born October 18, 1936 in Brooklyn , New York City , United States ; died October 25, 2014 ) was an American-British rabbi in London , England .

She studied English and comparative literature at the City University of New York in the 1960s and graduated with a Masters . She first visited England in 1967 with a tour group.

In the 1980s she studied at Leo Baeck College in London to become a rabbi. Along with Elizabeth Tikvah Sarah, she was one of the first openly lesbian graduates from Leo Baeck College. Shulman was ordained a rabbi in 1989 . In 1990, Shulman and a group of friends founded the first gay and lesbian synagogue , Beit Klal Yisrael in London, of which she became the first female rabbi. In addition to her work there, she has worked part-time since her ordination at the Finchley Reform Synagogue . She also taught at Leo Baeck College at the Center for Jewish Education as a part-time lecturer in Jewish thought.
