The Sheldon Lake (also known as Sheldon Lake ) is a reservoir in Sheldon Lake State Park at Sheldon in northeast Harris County in the State of Texas . It is north of US Highway 90 , about 16 miles east of Houston and 6 miles upriver from Channelview , and docks the Carpenters Bayou in the San Jacinto River basin.

The lake is 4.82 km long and 1.6 km wide; the total area is 4.85 km². The catchment area covers about 48.55 km². The 3 m high containment structure is 14 m above sea level . The storage capacity of the lake is 6,604,061 m³.

The dam was completed in 1943 and was the primary water supplier to industry along the Houston Ship Channel . At that time, water was pumped from the San Jacinto River into the reservoir. After World War II , the facility became obsolete and the water was diverted to Houston. In May 1952, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department acquired the reservoir and the surrounding area in order to set it up as a water bird sanctuary, among other things.

The dam was rebuilt in 1957, during which alligators , raccoons , mink , otters , opossums , muskrats , rabbits , white-tailed deer and beaver rats were released.

The area around the reservoir has been administered by the Texas Environmental Protection Agency since 1984, the funds for this are set by the state.
