Shelly Kagan (* 1956 ) is Professor of Philosophy at Yale University . He is best known for his publications in the field of moral philosophy and normative ethics . In it he deals in particular with the debate between consequentialist and deontological theories. A philosophical lecture he gave on death can be viewed freely on the Internet, as part of the Open Yale Courses project .

Education and career

Kagan, who has Jewish ancestry, received his BA from Wesleyan University and his Ph.D. at Princeton University in 1982, under the supervision of Thomas Nagel . Prior to Yale, he worked at the University of Pittsburgh and University of Illinois at Chicago . In 2016, Kagan was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
