Sherif Sonbol (born December 6, 1956 in Giza ) is an Egyptian socially critical photographer .

Life

Sonbol was born the son of an engineer. His mother died shortly after he was a child. At the age of three he became a diabetic. However, he did not succeed in studying medicine in order to find a cure for diabetes mellitus . To do this, he became an accountant and underwriter for the Navy of an Egyptian reinsurance company. Back then he only took up photography as a hobby.

After about seven years, Sonbol left the reinsurance company and worked in the photography department of the Egyptian, Arabic-language newspaper Al-Ahram Al-Yomi . This was the most famous newspaper in the Middle East at the time. Since the government salaries were too low and not even enough to buy a pot, the photographer left the newspaper.

Shortly afterwards, the magazine Nesf El-Donia was created , whose photography department Sonbol created and therefore also managed. To this end, he worked as a graphic designer in the US embassy in Cairo and also taught in their IT department. Despite the US Embassy being paid ten times more than the newspaper's salary, he decided to quit because he didn't like office work. When the Egyptian "Al-Ahram" Foundation founded the Al-Ahram Weekly, a new English-language newspaper, he initially became a photographer there; he is now the director of the photography department. His name became known to foreigners, especially through his photos and articles in this newspaper.

He was best known through the magazine Kalam Al Naas , in which he published photographs of famous Arab celebrities and stars. From a photographic point of view, Sherif Sonbol took over the newly founded magazine Maraia Al Naas , in which exclusively interior decorations and residential buildings were discussed. The texts came from his colleague Moguib Rushdy. The photographer has been working at the Cairo Opera House since 1988 and has published two books.

Otherwise Sherif Sonbol is a freelance photographer and designs photo books. His photos can be seen in books and exhibitions.
