Sheriff Court Building

The Sheriff Court Building is the town hall of the Scottish town of Forfar in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The Tolbooth des Burghs Forfar was built around 1590 on the site of the Sheriff Court . In the early 1780s, the magistrate decided to build a new municipal administration building. The Scottish architect James Playfair was entrusted with the planning of the new building, which was built between 1786 and 1788. The contracted construction cost was £ 1,100. With the exception of the dome, today's southern section of the Sheriff Court has largely been preserved. Since the dome did not prove to be rainproof, it was removed in 1804 and replaced with a platform roof. The city jail, which was also housed in the building, was described in 1798 as gloomy and desolate. It was also noted that the spatial usability of the building is limited by the assembly room on the upper floor. In 1843 the prison moved into a new building, which made renovations possible. In 1952 the hall with four of were A. L. Russell -designed stained glass windows fitted.

An extension was added directly to the north in the 1820s. After planning by David Neave in 1821, construction was completed in 1824.
