Sherin Khankan
Sherin Khankan (born October 13, 1974 ) is the first female imam in Denmark .
Life
Khankan was born in Denmark to a Syrian father and a Finnish mother. She studied in Damascus and returned to her native land in 2000. She then obtained a Masters in Sociology of Religion and Philosophy from the University of Copenhagen.
The Dane founded the Mariam Mosque in Copenhagen , which differs in essential points from traditional mosques. Similar mosques already exist in the United States, Canada or Germany, but this was a novelty for Denmark in 2016. Mixed religious couples are allowed to marry in the mosque.
In 2001 Khankan founded the organization "Critical Muslims"; she also works as a book author. Because of these activities she counted 2,016 of the 100 Women of the BBC .
