Sherlock Holmes is a British television series on the BBC based on novels by the writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle . It aired on the BBC in two seasons from 1964 to 1968. In Germany, the first season was not shown, but only with Peter Cushing in the role of detective in the second season, the ARD took over the broadcast from 1969. However, some episodes were missing that are still considered lost today. The original ARD synchronizations can also no longer be found, which is why a new synchro was made for a DVD release by Pidax in 2017 .
action
Private detective Sherlock Holmes, operating in England in the Victorian era, is both a brilliant advisor and a private detective. He is consulted by the police and other detective agencies to solve crimes. He also takes private cases himself and his clients range from poor to kings. His deductive skills and encyclopedic knowledge help him solve the most complex cases. He is supported in his work by his friend and companion, the military veteran Dr. John Watson, with whom he shares an apartment at 221b Baker Street. Holmes uses the first forensic working methods in his investigations and his ability to observe in detail makes him a successful detective, whereby his analytical-rational thinking is very helpful.
background
Due to the great success of the first color version of a Holmes film adaptation, The Dog of Baskerville (1959), in which Peter Cushing already appeared as Sherlock Holmes, the BBC had Sherlock Holmes produced as a television series a few years later . In the first season Douglas Wilmer first played the title character Holmes, who was then replaced by Cushing in the second season. In contrast to the American Holmes series in the fifties with Ronald Howard in the title role, which told stories of its own, the BBC stuck closely to the literary models of Arthur Conan Doyle .
Most of the episodes of the second season that were shown on television in Germany disappeared at some point after their release and are still considered lost to this day. When it was released on DVD in 2017, the original BBC material was re-dubbed. The series episode no. 28 Daszeichen der Vier was published for the first time in Germany.
