Shigeo Suzuki

Shigeo Suzuki ( Japanese 鈴木 茂 男 , Suzuki Shigeo ; * around 1940) is a Japanese jazz musician ( alto saxophone , soprano saxophone , flute , also clarinet ).

Shigeo Suzuki was active in the Japanese jazz scene from the early 1960s; his main instrument was the alto saxophone. In 1961 the first recordings ( Karuizawa Music Inn ) were made with a band in which u. a. Sadao Watanabe , Akira Miyazawa , Tadayuki Harada , Norio Maeda , Tatsurō Takimoto and Takeshi Inomata played. In the following years he worked a. a. with Helen Merrill ( In Japan , 1963), Toshiko Akiyoshi , Takeshi Inomata & His West Liners, Hiroshi Suzuki and with Terumasa Hino . In the 1970s and 80s he was involved in the recordings of Sadakazu Tabata & Groovy 11, as a member of Toshiyuki Miyama's big band New Herd with Charles Mingus ( Charles Mingus with Orchestra 1971).

Suzuki also played with Masabumi Kikuchi / Gil Evans (1972), Masahiko Togashi , Jimmy Takeuchi , Yūji Takahashi , Yumi Matsutoya , Takeo Yamashita , Yoshimasa Kasai & His New Orleans Jass Band and with the rock band Southern All Stars . He also worked with his own formations; played in his sextet a. a. Hiroshi Suzuki (trombone), Ichirō Mimori (saxophone) and Masabumi Kikuchi. He released the album Brisa (BMG / SONY) under his own name . In the field of jazz, Tom Lord lists him in 34 recording sessions between 1961 and 1984, most recently with Martha Miyake ( Sentimental Journey / Route 66 ).
