Toshiyuki Miyama
Toshiyuki Miyama ( Japanese 宮 間 利 之 , Miyama Toshiyuki ; born October 31, 1921 in Chiba ) is a Japanese jazz musician ( clarinet , alto and tenor saxophone , flute , bass clarinet ) who is best known as the leader of his big band New Herd .
Live and act
Toshiyuki Miyama became a member of the orchestra of the Japanese Navy in 1939, in which he spent the Second World War and played on board many ships. After the war he continued to work as a professional musician. In 1950 he founded his jazz band Jive Aces , with whom he performed primarily in the clubs of the American occupation forces.
In 1958 Toshiyuki Miyama expanded his Jive Aces into a large-format orchestra, which he now continues to operate as New Herd . The band acted as a dance orchestra. In the mid-1960s she opened up more and more to modern jazz , also influenced by the band arrangers Kozaburo Yamaki and Hiroshi Takami. With the guest soloist Masahiko Satō , the album Perspective was created , which was released in 1969 and was very successful.
Due to his popularity, Toshiyuki was able to release numerous albums with his New Herd in the 1970s , which were stylistically heterogeneous and partly explored the field of free jazz, but partly also had roots in pop jazz . Stars like Thelonious Monk , Charles Mingus , Masahiko Togashi and Stomu Yamashita have been accompanied on some albums (and also on live performances) . In 1974 he performed with his New Herd at the Monterey Jazz Festival with guest soloists such as Dizzy Gillespie and Mongo Santamaría . The following year Toshiyuki presented his New Herd at the Newport Jazz Festival .
Since the 1980s, things have calmed down around Toshiyuki Miyama, who made 23 recordings with his orchestra as leader between 1961 and 2005. In 2000 he celebrated the 50th birthday of his New Herd in concerts . In the same year he was honored with the "Art Festival Excellence Prize" ( Geijutsusai-yūshū-shō ) of the Department of Culture .
