Shimmura Izuru ( Japanese 新村 出 , Go : Chōzan (重 山); born October 4, 1876 in Yamaguchi Prefecture ; died August 17, 1967 in Kyoto ) was a Japanese linguist.

Live and act

Shimmura Izuru graduated from Tōkyō University in 1899 in linguistics. After he was assistant professor at his alma mater and had trained in Europe, he became professor of linguistics at the University of Kyoto . There he worked until he was adopted as "Meiyo Kyōju".

In the tradition of Ueda Kazutoshi , he tried to make Western linguistic ideas usable for Japan, as represented by Saussure . He dealt scientifically with languages, especially with Japanese. He was also concerned with the introduction of Western culture into Japan during the Muromachi and Edo periods , known as the Namban culture . In 1935 he published the term dictionary "Jien" (辞 苑), and in 1955 an expanded edition, the well-known " Kōjien " (広 辞 苑).

Shimmura's linguistic publications include “Reflections on the history of the languages ​​of East Asia” (東方 言語 史 叢 考, Tōhō gengo-shi sōkō) 1927, “Sources for the East Asian languages” (東 亜 語 源 志, Tōa-go genshi) 1930. Also published he on the Namban culture "Multicolored Namban" (南蛮 更 紗 、 Namban sarasa) 1924, "Namban reports" (南蛮 広 記, Namban kōki) 1925 and a "Cultural History of Christianity in Japan" (日本 吉利 支 丹 文化史, Nihon Christian bunka -shi) 1940. His complete work "新村 出 全集" was published from 1971 to 1973 in 15 volumes.

In 1956 Shinmura was honored as a person with special cultural merits and was awarded the Order of Culture in the same year .

Remarks

  1. Meiyo Kyōju (名誉 教授) is occasionally rendered in German as "Professor emeritus". But in contrast to this title, which is automatically used on retirement, this is a special award only occasionally granted in Japan.
