St. Martin in Glaning

Glaning ( Italian Cologna ) is a scattered settlement in the municipality of Jenesien near Bozen in South Tyrol .

The hamlet is located on the southwestern roof of the Tschögglberg , a ridge of the Sarntal Alps that rises between the Etschtal and the Sarntal . It consists of Oberglaning and Unterglaning and occupies altitudes between 700  m and 1200  m .

The settlement consists of scattered courtyards and houses. Its center is marked by the late Gothic St. Martin's Church at Messnerhof, an exposition of the Benedictines of the Muri-Gries Abbey , whose construction is attested as early as 1334.

The old forms of the toponym , documented since the 13th and 14th centuries, are Glænie, Glanie, Glänie de sancto Jenesio, Gleni, Glänie and Glany . The name of origin Glaninger ( Glaenyer, Glænier, Glanier ) has also been attested in Bozen since the early 14th century .

The oldest farms in Glaning include Steifler (with a residential tower from the 14th century), Plattner, Kreuzer, Kerschbaumer, Malgarer and Mair zu Rumsein in Oberglaning, and Messner, Noner (Parlegg), Noafer and Egger in Unterglaning.

Glaning can be reached via a side road that branches off halfway up the main road from Bolzano to Jenesien. In ancient times, a mule track that still exists today led from Gries-Quirein , starting from the Berndorf residence , over the Guntschnaberg to Glaning.
